Maria Watts Honored for Mentoring Women and Girls

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) announced today that Maria Watts was recognized as a Woman of Distinction by the Women & Girls Fund of Waukesha County. The award honors a woman who demonstrates commitment to improving the quality of life in Waukesha County while inspiring other women and girls to do the same.

As WHEDA’s Southeast Region Community and Economic Development Officer, Watts is a steadfast advocate for affordable housing and economic empowerment. She has helped hundreds of public and private entities leverage the organization’s knowledge, resources, and programs.

“My soul is nurtured by helping people achieve the potential that I see they have,” Watts said. “When I see someone who needs help, my instinct is to become a connector, helping them access resources and programs and making introductions to the right people to overcome any obstacles.”

Before WHEDA, Watts worked as a housing coordinator for La Casa De Esperanza, where she began her lifelong commitment to affordable housing and overall community development. Her work addressed the unique housing challenges in Waukesha County.

Watts bridges her professional roles with her community involvement to create powerful synergies. She serves as the vice chairwoman of the UMOS board, a national nonprofit advocacy organization assisting underserved populations. She serves on the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC) Loan Committee. She is a board member of the Waukesha County Home Board, BizStarts, the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC), North Westside CDC, 30th Street Corridor, and Waukesha Habitat for Humanity.
