How to Download Executable Files
Using Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Right click on the file name. A window will pop up that looks similar to this screen shot.
- Choose "Save Target As".
- A window will pop up which has a "Save In" address bar that allows you to save the file. Your computer will most likely show a default folder to which all executable files will be saved. On many computers this will be the C:\temp directory. If you want to save the executable file to a disk or a different folder, type in the directory path where you want to save the file, i.e., C:\WHEDA and click Save.
- Within your file manager or Windows Explorer, go to the disk or folder where you have saved the file. Double click on the downloaded file to open. Choose the Unzip option. You do not need to use a WinZip utility to open these executable files. If more than one file is contained in the self-extracting file, all files will appear in this directory.
Using Netscape
- Right click on the file name and choose Save Link As.
- When the Save As window appears, use it to move to the disk or folder you want to save it to and click Save.
Using Other Browsers
Browsers use similar methods for downloading files. Some type of window will appear and tell you either that your browser is not configured to view this type of file, or offer different choices and ask you to make a decision. However, your right mouse button, also may show some choices that will make sense to you. If options similar to the ones shown above for Internet Explorer or Netscape do not appear, consult your browser's documentation.
